SAN MARCOS: Bayshore Prep, a charter school with an office on Rancho Santa Fe Road, has hired an executive director to run its 240-student independent-study program.
Cynthia Garrison-Arce, who was recently an administrator at Eagles Peak, a Vista-based charter school, will join Bayshore later this month. Mary Quella, a Bayshore board member, said Garrison-Arce is an experienced educator who is bilingual in English and Spanish.
Hiring a new executive director with a valid state administrative credential is one of the requirements Bayshore must accomplish this year to remain open. The San Marcos Unified School District in June allowed the charter school a one-year conditional extension after Bayshore ran into some oversight problems, including how it was recording student transcripts.
Quella said the school had been searching for a new executive director before San Marcos Unified made it a requirement. She said Bayshore is on track with meeting the school district's requirements, which include establishing better management procedures and policies.

Golf club to honor military personnel
SAN MARCOS: The Lake San Marcos Men's and Women's Golf Club are once again organizing an appreciation event called “Salute to Our Heroes,” which includes lunch, golf and dinner, for Marines and Navy personnel stationed at Camp Pendleton.
The third annual event will be Sept. 6 at the Lake San Marcos Resort and Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive. About 80 military personnel are expected, including about 20 from the Wounded Warrior Battalion. Those who are physically unable to play golf will be treated to games and a magic show.
Organizers are selling spots to play golf and eat dinner with military personnel who were recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. The cost is $120 per person for country club members and covers golf for one but dinner for two. Nonmembers pay $150 a person.
Volunteers are seeking $70 donations to cover the cost of dinners for their military guests and their guests' significant others. Donations are also wanted for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund. Last year, people gave more than $14,000.
For more information, contact Dennis McKee, a retired Marine, (760)729-0203 or Frank Shubert, (760)471-7177.
