Entertainment staff chat transcript – Jan. 10

SIGNONSANDIEGO

5:14 p.m. January 10, 2008

Entertainment Guide producers Erin Glass and Claire Madigan talked about what to do in San Diego this weekend during a Thursday afternoon online chat at signonsandiego.com/chat.
moderator(P) Good afternoon and welcome to our entertainment chat. The team is here to answer your questions and help you have a memorable weekend.

moderator(P) Erin and Claire, what's up?

erin_glass(P) how's it going?

moderator(P) It's a great day for me. Warm, sunny and I'm all smiles.

moderator(P) And I'm listening to my favorite "new" song on my iPod: Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)

moderator(P) Speaking of music, if someone wanted to go out to a concert this weekend, what would you suggest?

claire_madigan(P) well depends. how much money you got?

moderator(P) Hey, George Bush is here! What's up sir?

moderator(P) We like high profile guests :-)

George_W._Bush(Q) fool me once cant get fooled again

moderator(A) I remember a movie by a certain director (Moore) that had that as its last line. Are you looking for anythign to do this weekend?

moderator(P) Claire, let's assume I have between $15 and $30 to spend on a night out.

claire_madigan(P) High profile? Well then I'd suggest forking over 30 bucks to see Lupe Fiasco on Tuesday.

claire_madigan(P) still thinking about high profile over the WEEKEND.

moderator(P) Hmmm. I've never heard of Lupe Fiasco. What kind of act is it?

moderator(P) Erin, you cover restaurants. I've got a friend coming into town. It's her first time West of New Mexico. She'll be here for three days. Where should we go? Remember we need breakfast, lunch and dinner.

claire_madigan(P) Lupe fiasco is a nimble Muslim rapper from Chicago that just dropped his comic book style new album called Lupe Fiasco's the cool. Playing at the Belly Up.

moderator(P) That sounds good. But what about over the weekend? Are there any cool acts in the city?

claire_madigan(P) There are a ton of good local acts to see this weeekend. Friday Greg Laswell is playing Belly Up. Have you seen that old navy commerical with that song in the back ground that goes "... if you are chilly, come take my sweater."? Laswell in that video. the guys shes hugging. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJOzdLwvTHA

moderator(P) I LOVE that commercial! Thanks for the vid link.

erin_glass(P) Bloody Mary's at the Hash House in Hillcrest for breakfast. OR my favorite is coffee from Pete's and a multigrain roll next door from Bread & Cie in Hillcrest, too. Scones from Rebecca's in South Park are good too.

moderator(P) Welcome chula_vista and Pere. How are you doing today?

chula_vista(Q) hola

moderator(A) Hola. What are you looking to do this weekend?

moderator(P) Bread & Cie. I had forgotten about that. Yes, we'll have to visit.

chula_vista(Q) I am looking for a job.. does anyone can help me?

erin_glass(A) What sort of work you looking for Chula?

chula_vista(Q) keep your conversation flowing

moderator(A) We intend to do just that. And everyone out there can help us by asking questions!

chula_vista(Q) i need money to go out, i need money for everthing

claire_madigan(A) well if you live in north county you can see a really good local band, swim party, and another good band from San Francisco, Birds&Batteries, FOR FREE at the Surf 'n' Saddle on Friday.

chula_vista(Q) anything

erin_glass(A) alright. well i have this bookseller friend leo. and he pays this guy $7 a night to park outside for protection reasons. He said he'd pay a fraction of that price if I hang around his store between 4-5 am. I haven't responded yet, but we could split up the week.

chula_vista(Q) i am looking to find a job

moderator(A) Have you looked in our jobs listings? Start by visiting http://careers.signonsandiego.com/index.php . There just may be something in there for you.

erin_glass(P) and it's not in chula vista/

chula_vista(Q) thatīs cool

claire_madigan(A) Yea. Surf 'n' Saddle is in North County, but 'nother cheap show that could be good is Hotel St. George at the Ken Club on Saturday, it's only 5 bucks.

chula_vista(Q) one meal and thatīs it is gone

erin_glass(A) it's only 3 less than 10

chula_vista(Q) thank you moderator

moderator(A) Sure. My brother and a friend of mine are also looking for jobs. They both got laid off. It's tough right now, so I'm sympathizing with you. But hang in there, you'll find something.

chula_vista(Q) i wish i can make around 30

erin_glass(A) well i wish i can make around 50. but i'm trying to keep it legal. we could do a weekend lemonade stand.

moderator(P) OK, some of our users may not be able to afford to blow a lot this weekend to go out. How about suggestions under $5? I'm thining museums, galleries, outdoor parks, community festivals, etc. Any suggestions Claire and Erin?

erin_glass(P) WELPS rob, tomorrow night is the opening for Seminal Project's exhibition on Chauney Peck. Cartoonish art on junk. Sort of fun. And free. In Little Italy.

chula_vista(Q) not bad idea at all

moderator(A) Sure. We aim to help with any questions you've got.

claire_madigan(P) um, well there are alwways free shows at scolari's but i can't tell you how good they will be.

moderator(P) I've never heard of Scolari's. Can anyone give me more info about it?

moderator(P) Have any of our readers ever been there?

chula_vista(Q) sounds intersting... up for grabs

claire_madigan(A) The show at ken club? Yea, they are a brand new band, but the singer was in the much beloved band Vinyl Radio ...

moderator(P) This is a little off the inexpensive theme we've been on, but has anyone been to see the Bodies exhibit at UTC? If I'm not mistaken, this is the last weekend for it.

claire_madigan(P) in case you didn't know, Scolaris is a dive bar in north park they have free shows every night but you never know what you're gonna get. i was there on Monday, stuff napkins in my ears.

moderator(P) Hmmm. Who played Monday. Were they any good?

chula_vista(Q) i will be back, if you know a bout a good job. send me a text message. [The e-mail address was removed from the transcript]

moderator(A) Thanks for visiting. We'll remember you if we hear of anything.

claire_madigan(P) god, i have no idea. well we thought we were goign to see the followers but they actually weren't playing. i know the second band was from Sacramento.

erin_glass(P) i've been to the bodies show, and well, i have mixed feelings about it. very interesting, but pretty controversial.

moderator(P) Why is it so controversial?

claire_madigan(P) but you'll be happy to know they got new video poker machines and that means new photo hunt photos!!!!

erin_glass(P) well, um, it's an exhibition of dead bodies for one -- from china -- and, uh, one can't be completely sure if the bodies being used were totally cool with being hung up naked and dead in a museum in a mall.

moderator(P) That sounds kinda cool. Speaking of video poker, anything cool happening at Viejas this weekend?

claire_madigan(P) Uhhhhh. ?????

moderator(P) I shudder at the idea that could happen to me. But it is going away on the 13th. Would you recommend going?

moderator(P) Yes at the Viejas Casino. I keep seeing billboards for it, but I've never been. I was wondering if you knew of any good shows up there this weekend.

claire_madigan(P) nope. i do not.

erin_glass(P) I don't know. Half way through covering it -- I had to go a bunch of times -- I started feeling really weird about just covering it, even though I tried to make the ethical issues clear. It's easy to look at -- probably easier than you'd expect, but is it something you really want to support? I'm all for science, but let's not dehumanize ourselves in the process.

moderator(P) That's OK. I was just thinking out loud for some of our East County readers.

moderator(P) Well time sure flies. That's it folks. Please return next week for more entertainment tips, or whatever other help you may need.
