Warwick's in La Jolla is referring to it as an “evening with the Queen of Historical Fiction.” And why not, given Philippa Gregory's long-running success with novels set in the British Isles of centuries past, such as “The Other Boleyn Girl,” which also became a recent feature film.
Gregory will be reading from and signing her new book, “The Other Queen,” at 7:30 p.m. next Friday. The book tells the tale of Mary, Queen of Scots, during her years of captivity in England, as she conspired against Queen Elizabeth I. And because Gregory might attract a crowd bigger than Warwick's can accommodate, her appearance will take place in the gymnasium at the Gillispie School, 7830 Girard Ave., La Jolla.
Admission is free, but Warwick's is also offering what it calls Royal Event passes for $35, which include a signed copy of the book, priority placement in the signing line, a photo with Gregory, and a $5 Warwick's coupon. For every pass, Warwick's also will donate $5 to the charity founded by the author, Gardens for the Gambia, set up to provide wells with clean water for sustainable agriculture in the west African nation.
There is even a happy hour from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Whisk n' Ladle restaurant (1044 Wall St., La Jolla), with British theme drinks. There are special rates on Bloody Marys for anyone who shows up in costume.
